Atle Holtan (b. 1978) is a visual storyteller with a background in film, documentary, and classical art.
He is formally trained in oil painting and visual composition, and has more than twentyfive years of experience as a camera operator, working across drama, documentary, and major national and royal events.
Throughout his professional life, Holtan has moved between very different realities, from the halls of the Royal Palace to the shadows of the street.
Holtan has never been merely a technician behind the camera.
He is an observer, a listener, and a questioner.
Alongside his visual work, Holtan has written texts for over two decades, fragments, reflections, and dramatic explorations without knowing their final purpose. They emerged as a way of understanding, of exploring questions rooted in the spiritual, the philosophical, and the mythological. Over time, these texts began to converge, gaining weight and coherence as his understanding of the Christian tradition deepened.

Who defines the framework of what we call reality?
And what happens when we stop looking for what lies beneath the surface?
Through his work with film and imagery, he learned how to construct scenes, but also how to expose them. He came to understand early on that the same tools that make a scene convincing are also used to manipulate reality. Color, light, contrast, and composition are not neutral – they are instruments of influence within culture and society.
With The Fall, Holtan steps forward as an author for the first time.
The book was not planned. It was not rushed. It arrived as something he had been waiting for, long before he knew what he was waiting for.
The Fall is not a book of preaching. It arises from faith, but also from a refusal to remain silent in the face of spiritual erosion and cultural amnesia. It is written for those who sense unease but lack language, and also for those who recognize signs, but feel there is more they cannot yet name.
Atle Holtan lives in Oslo. The Fall is his first book.
